Nailsea Hockey Pitch

Class II Hockey Lighting Standards in accordance with BS EN 12193:2018 state that areas which are designed for playing Hockey should achieve 300 lux average illuminance and 0.7 uniformity. Class I FIH figures state that the figures achieved must meet 350 lux average illuminance and 0.7 uniformity. A small allowance is acceptable with regards to the lighting levels provided, but uniformity does not include any allowance.

Our Lighting Design Team is experienced and exceptionally capable when it comes to providing compliant designs for both internal and external projects. With regards to sports lighting, we regularly provide multiple compliant schemes to our customer base each week, and we are thorough in our approach to the design process; this includes a provision for detailed notes on the front cover of all of our completed designs.

We recently visited a Hockey Pitch in Nailsea, where our Skyline Powertron Asymmetric LED Floodlights were delivered and installed onsite to provide a solution for a sports centre. After the installation process was completed, we were asked to visit the site due to glare and spillage results being higher than expected. Our Area Sales Representative first visited the site, providing imagery, video, and figures to our Lighting Design Team for consideration. It was clear from the information provided that the configuration of our Floodlights did not correlate with what was shown on our lighting design. This required investigation and a visit to the site from our Service Engineer and a member of our Lighting Design Team.

Upon visiting the site, our staff were able to determine that our fittings were tilted to a degree which meant that the resulting spillage and glare would be too high, also impacting the uniformity for the lighting provided. With a revised design and a better understanding of the issues faced, our Service Engineer, along with our Lighting Design Team member, fixed the problem by reducing the tilt angle of our products.

We are delighted that our Skyline Powertron Asymmetric LED Floodlights were chosen for the project, and we are even more pleased that they are now installed in a way which ensures compliance and quality. We take great satisfaction in seeing the true reflection of our lighting design service in practice.

We would like to thank everyone involved in the project for working closely with us to ensure that the lighting solution provided by BELL Lighting was suitable for the local area.

BEFORE

Prior to being visited by our Service Engineer and a member of our Lighting Design Team, our Skyline Powertron Asymmetric LED Floodlights were installed on 15m columns, with the aim being to provide Class II results for Hockey.

Our fittings provided the necessary lighting levels to the area, with a lighting design provided to ensure that further information was present to assist with the installation process. Upon being installed, it had become clear that the fittings were tilted to a degree which was higher than the figure shown on our lighting design, meaning that added glare and spillage was present.

AFTER

Our Service Engineer, along with a member of our Lighting Design Team, visited the site in order to manouver our fittings to a maximum of +25° from flat glass, with a range between +15° and +25° with reference to the tilting angle of each product. Our products were also supplied with deep shields where appropriate in order to further reduce glare and spillage.

Upon changes being made to the tilt angles of our products, the results were dramatically improved. Spillage was reduced significantly, meaning that the local area was no longer negatively impacted by the lighting provided to the sports centre.

BEFORE

As mentioned in the above text, our Lighting Design Team provided a comprehensive service to facilitate this project, meaning that the number of fittings provided ensured that lighting levels were more than suitable for the area in question. What we were keen to address when visiting the site was the glare and spillage resulting from the tilt angle of our products.

AFTER

The image which is shown here represents Nailsea Hockey Pitch after being visited by representatives from BELL Lighting. The change here is visually striking, and we are delighted with the end result. It is clear to see that the change in tilt with reference to our products, ensuring that they meet our design criteria, has reduced glare and improved uniformity, whilst also reducing spillage considerably.

The image here represents what our Lighting Design Team recommended, with the end result being close to the design estimations provided.

BEFORE

Our main concern when visiting the site for this project, as discussed previously, was spillage. It is vital for any external sports lighting project that local residents are not impacted by the lighting which we provide. We want to reduce spillage, comply with zone regulations, and provide compliant lighting solutions to our customers and end users.

With the original configuration of our products at a tilt which was not suitable for the columns involved, too much spillage was shown from the installation of our products. This is something which we were not comfortable with, and a visit from our Service Engineer was vital to ensure that the surrounding areas were protected against spillage to the degree which was present.

AFTER

This image of the resulting spillage once our products were tilted to an appropriate degree, is in clear contrast to the before image shown above. The light spillage shown here is minimal, and the houses which are present in the background of this image are not impacted by the lighting which we have provided to the local Hockey Pitch.

We are extremely happy with the change which can be seen here. The results shown provide an excellent example of why lighting design is so important, and furthermore, why installation in accordance with lighting design parameters is important. We are always keen to provide compliant lighting designs to our customer base, and we are equally prepared to provide technical advice to our customers, or to visit site when necessary, to ensure that our products achieve the results which we know they are capable of.

We will also be working hard behind the scenes to understand how we can ensure that our products are as clear as possible with reference to installation onsite.
