When you're choosing an LED batten, there's plenty to consider. Light output, efficiency and reliability matter, but so do the practical details: how easy is it to install, can it be configured for different applications, and how many products need to be kept in stock?
These are exactly the challenges we've focused on with Apex, BELL Lighting's range of selectable-wattage, selectable-CCT LED battens for commercial and industrial applications.
The range comprises three models: Apex Dura for demanding environments, Apex Ultra for versatile commercial lighting and Apex Mentor for applications where visual comfort and low glare are priorities.
All three offer four selectable wattage settings, 3000K, 4000K and 6000K colour temperatures, and compatibility with our universal plug-in accessory system.
We've spent years refining these products, listening to contractors and working with our wholesale partners. The result is a range we're particularly proud of, combining performance and reliability with the flexibility and installation features that make a difference on site.
What Makes the BELL Apex LED Batten Range Different?
One of our biggest objectives with Apex was to make life easier for wholesalers and contractors.
When we originally looked at our Dura anti-corrosive battens, a wholesaler needed to stock 16 variants to cover the available requirements. By introducing selectable wattage, a plug-in emergency pack and a plug-in sensor, we could cover those requirements with three stock lines: a batten, an emergency pack and a sensor.
That was a significant step forward.
We subsequently developed Ultra and Mentor with the same flexibility, before standardising the plug-in accessories across all three ranges.
That's how Apex came together: three different battens, each designed for particular applications, supported by one common accessory system.
For wholesalers, fewer stock lines can cover more customer requirements. For contractors, it's about having the flexibility to adapt a fitting to the job without compromising on quality, reliability or ease of installation.
What's the Difference Between Apex Dura, Ultra and Mentor?
Although all three share the same approach to configurability and accessories, each has its own strengths.

Apex Dura LED Batten – Built for Demanding Environments
Apex Dura is our most robust LED batten, developed for industrial and commercial environments such as warehouses and manufacturing facilities.
Its IP66 ingress protection, IK10 impact rating and anti-corrosive construction provide protection where durability matters.
Key Features of Apex Dura
- IP66 and IK10 protection: High levels of ingress and impact protection for demanding environments.
- High efficiency: Delivers up to 160 lm/W.
- Selectable wattage and CCT: Four wattage settings and 3000K, 4000K or 6000K colour temperatures.
- Stainless-steel retaining clips: Remain raised when the fitting is opened, keeping them out of the way during reassembly.
- Suspended body design: Upper and lower sections remain connected when opened, simplifying installation and maintenance.
One thing we've paid particular attention to with Dura is installation. It's often the smaller details that make the biggest difference to a contractor.
If you're trying to reassemble a fitting while clips keep dropping into the way, even a straightforward job becomes frustrating. With Dura, the clips stay raised and the two sections remain suspended together.
We've also incorporated quality BESA mounting brackets, movable terminals and multiple cable-entry points. Not every idea is unique to BELL, but we've worked hard to bring together the installation features contractors value.
Dura also benefits from the Apex range's 70,000-hour L80 B10 rated life, 8-year product warranty and 2-year on-site warranty.

Apex Ultra LED Batten – Versatile Commercial Lighting
Apex Ultra is our streamlined, general-purpose LED batten, designed for a wide range of commercial interior applications.
Its slim steel body and polycarbonate diffuser provide a clean, unobtrusive appearance alongside the performance and reliability expected from Apex.
Key Features of Apex Ultra
- High efficiency: Delivers up to 160 lm/W.
- Selectable wattage and CCT: Four wattage settings and 3000K, 4000K or 6000K colour temperatures.
- Slim, lightweight construction: Practical to handle and install.
- Shatterproof construction: Provides additional durability for busy commercial environments.
- LED status indication: Green and red indicator LEDs provide a visual indication of operating status.
What we particularly like about Ultra is how much flexibility it offers without making the product unnecessarily complicated.
Contractors can select the required output and colour temperature, while universal Apex accessories allow emergency or sensor functionality to be added when needed.

Apex Mentor LED Batten – Low-Glare Lighting for Visual Comfort
Apex Mentor is our low-glare LED batten, developed for environments where visual comfort is particularly important.
In offices, classrooms and other spaces where people spend extended periods working at desks or using computer screens, controlling glare is an important part of creating an appropriate lighting environment.
Key Features of Apex Mentor
- UGR <19 and UGR <22 options: Low-glare versions for applications where visual comfort is a priority.
- Uniform illumination: High-light-transmission frosted polycarbonate diffuser helps deliver smooth light distribution.
- High efficiency: Delivers up to 140 lm/W.
- Installation flexibility: Multiple BESA entry points, loop-in/loop-out terminals and tool-free termination.
- IK08 impact protection: Provides additional durability for commercial applications.
During Mentor's development, we placed particular emphasis on glare performance. We wanted the fitting to provide appropriate low-glare options without sacrificing selectable wattage.
Lighting quality isn't simply about achieving the required illumination level. It's also about how comfortable the space is for the people using it.
A DALI-2 dimming version is also available for projects requiring additional lighting control.

Selectable Wattage and CCT: More Flexibility from Fewer Products
Every Apex Dura, Ultra and Mentor batten provides four selectable wattage settings and three colour temperatures:
- 3000K: Warm white
- 4000K: Cool white
- 6000K: Daylight
Warm white and daylight battens can represent relatively small sales volumes compared with 4000K products. Traditionally, that can mean special orders, longer lead times or additional stockholding.
With Apex, the same standard fitting provides all three colour temperatures.
Selectable wattage adds further flexibility, allowing contractors to choose an appropriate output rather than being restricted to a fixed-wattage product. Selecting a lower setting can also reduce power consumption where the corresponding light output meets the application's requirements.
It's a simple concept that makes product selection and stockholding more straightforward.
Universal Quick Fix Accessories Across the Apex Range
The Apex Quick Fix accessory system is one of the developments we're particularly pleased with.
Dura, Ultra and Mentor originally had separate plug-in accessory arrangements. We continued refining the system until we could standardise emergency, microwave and PIR accessories across the range.
For wholesalers, the benefit is reduced stockholding. For contractors, common accessories make it easier to carry useful spares in the van, respond to changing requirements and carry out maintenance without unnecessary trips back to the wholesaler.
Microwave and PIR sensor options provide On/Off and Corridor Dim functionality, allowing occupancy-based lighting control where required.
Apex Emergency Pack: Manual Test and Self-Test Functionality
The universal Apex 2.5W emergency pack adds emergency functionality to compatible Dura, Ultra and Mentor battens.
It uses a two-click plug-in installation system and carries a 5-year warranty.
One feature we're particularly pleased with is the ability to choose between manual testing and self-test operation.
An integrated test button allows emergency operation to be checked manually. Alternatively, the pack can be placed into self-test mode, enabling automatic testing and status indication.
This provides flexibility in how emergency testing is managed without requiring separate manual-test and self-test accessory variants.
Reliability Matters Just as Much as Flexibility
It's easy to focus on switchability and accessories, but Apex also needs to deliver on quality and reliability.
Across the range, we've specified a 70,000-hour L80 B10 rated life, supported by an 8-year product warranty and 2-year on-site warranty.
We've spent considerable time evaluating components, testing products and gathering installer feedback.
Our aim has been to deliver the quality and reliability you'd expect from a premium luminaire while keeping the range competitively priced.
For us, a good product isn't simply one with impressive specifications. It's one that performs reliably, is straightforward to install and makes life easier for the people using it.
